Work-Learn Experience Program

The Work-Learn Experience Program (Work-Learn) is an experiential learning program facilitated by the Career Centre in partnership with various departments across Laurier. On-campus departments can choose to have their student employees participate in the program. For fall/winter 2024-25, the following departments will have student employees enrolled in Work-Learn:

  • Advancement and External Relations
  • Athletics and Recreation
  • Enrolment Services
  • Faculty of Music
  • Student Success and Retention

The program is designed to help students make the most out of their on-campus work experience through setting learning objectives, increasing your awareness of transferable skills/competencies, and reflecting on your skill development and accomplishments.

Starting in September, students are enrolled in a course on Navigator where you can track your progress in the program and complete the following required program steps:

  • Watch an asynchronous orientation video (20 minutes) and set learning objectives (10 minutes) for your position tied to the competency framework.
  • Attend a synchronous Competency Reflection Workshop (30 minutes).
  • Complete a final reflection guided by the competency framework and a series of reflection questions (15 minutes).

Program steps should be completed during paid work hours. The program coordinator will email you once you’re enrolled in the course with more information on timelines and instructions for completing the steps. Please ensure to monitor your Laurier email for program reminders and instructions throughout the term.

If you have any questions about the program, contact worklearn@wlu.ca

Benefits of Participating in Work-Learn

  • Make connections between your workplace experience and your personal and professional development
  • Increase awareness of transferable skills and an understanding of the significance of each work experience
  • Articulate what has been learned on the job and how to market these skills
  • Develop language that can be used on resumés, further education applications and in interviews
  • Include your work experience on your Laurier Experience Record. Once experiences are included on your LER, you can publish it and share it to LinkedIn, use it in your resumé or job interviews, and for further education applications.
