Eligibility and Job Applications

The Laurier Work-Study Program (LWSP) supports part-time, on-campus employment opportunities for full-time domestic students who have financial need. To participate in the LWSP, you must first apply to have your eligibility for the program assessed. Students must apply ahead of each work term (fall/winter and spring/intersession/summer). Eligible students will have the opportunity to apply to open LWSP positions at the start of each work term.

Apply for Eligibility Assessment

The LWSP eligibility application will be automatically open on LORIS for students during application periods (see Timelines) meeting the preliminary eligibility criteria listed below:

  • domestic student (Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
  • registered full-time
    • undergraduate students must be registered in 1.5 credits in the term(s) you're applying for and remain registered full-time for the duration of the term(s).
    • graduate students must be full-time based on your program of study in the term(s) you're applying for and remain registered full-time for the duration of the term(s).
    • if you are registered with Accessible Learning with a reduced course load for full-time study, this requirement does not apply.
  • minimum 4.0 GPA (not applicable for students entering the first year of their program).

If you meet this preliminary eligibility criteria, you will need to complete a student budget form which will be assessed by Student Awards to determine your financial need and eligibility for the LWSP. If you require assistance with completing the eligibility application or have any questions about the eligibility criteria, please connect with Service Laurier.

Please note, eligibility for the program in previous years does not guarantee eligibility for subsequent years. You will be notified of your eligibility results via email within approximately one week after the LORIS eligibility application closes.

Prepare for Job Applications and Interviews

Prepare your cover letter and resumé and develop your interview skills by attending a Career Centre workshop, making an appointment with a career consultant or attending drop-in hours. Check out the Career Centre events calendar for more information.

Review the LWSP Student Code of Conduct so you understand the expectations and requirements of participating in the program.

Apply to Open Job Postings

If you are eligible for the LWSP, you will be notified via email and will be invited to apply for LWSP positions in Navigator. You will be competing with other eligible students for open positions.

There will be an initial job application period at the beginning of the work term. LWSP job postings will be available for approximately one week and you must apply for each position in which you are interested. There may be other jobs posted throughout the work term subject to availability, but most positions are hired during this initial application period.

Job Application Tips

  • Utilize available Career Centre services and take the time to prepare for your job applications and interviews.
  • Prioritize the quality of your job applications over quantity.
  • Tailor your resumé and cover letter to each position you are applying for. Small touches like directing your cover letter to the hiring supervisor make a big difference. You can find supervisor information at the bottom of each job posting in Navigator.
  • Take the time to proofread your applications (or get a friend to help you) and make sure they are concise, easy-to-read, and error-free.
  • If you are using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to assist with improving/enhancing your resumé(s), make sure to review the results carefully. Your human instinct and research are important and will help you make appropriate decisions.

Interview and Selection Process

The interview and selection process are at the discretion of the hiring supervisor. Students accepted to the LWSP are not guaranteed a position through the program.

Candidates selected for an interview will be notified by the hiring supervisor. Candidates that are not selected for an interview will not receive notification. However, the application status for all applicants in Navigator will be updated once a position is filled.

Student Code of Conduct

As a student participating in the LWSP, you are agreeing to:

  • provide factual and accurate information in your job application documents and in any interviews.
  • accept only one LWSP job offer (exceptions for short-term floater positions). Once you accept a job offer, you have entered a binding agreement and are expected to honour your commitment to the position.
  • complete the entire work term, starting and ending on the dates agreed upon with the hiring supervisor. If unforeseen circumstances arise and you need to resign from the position early, you must give your hiring supervisor and the LWSP coordinator appropriate notice (minimum of 2 weeks).
  • attend and be on time for all training and scheduled shifts.
  • abide by all Laurier employment obligations, including all University policies and procedures and completing all mandatory Laurier employee training.
  • respect equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and Indigeneity as part of the core values of Laurier.
  • maintain the highest level of professionalism and show respect for all students, faculty and staff.
  • observe and follow all safety standards as may be applicable for the position.
  • only access confidential information that is necessary for the completion of employment duties and do not use, disclose, communicate, or convey any such information, except as required in the performance of your role.
  • inform your employer of any situation where there may be a conflict of interest, and do not use your position, or knowledge gained through employment, for private or personal advantage.
  • complete all experiential learning program steps by the communicated deadlines (see onboarding and program requirements).
