LWSP Onboarding and Program Requirements

As you’re preparing to start your LWSP position, please review the following information to ensure you’re familiar with the process and program requirements.

Job Offer

If you are selected for a position, you will receive a job offer and/or hiring form from your supervisor. Please ensure to confirm your acceptance of the job and return a signed copy in a timely manner.

Students may only accept one LWSP job offer per work term (exceptions may be made for short-term floater positions). Once you accept a job offer, you have entered a binding agreement and are expected to honour your commitment to the position. Review the LWSP Student Code of Conduct to ensure you understand the expectations and requirements of participating in the program.

Payroll

One and Two-Term Positions

There may be up to a two-week delay from when your supervisor submits payroll documentation to when your timesheets are set-up in LORIS. You should receive an email to update your TD1 once your timesheets have been set-up. You will also need to complete the direct deposit form if you have not done so before. You will be required to enter your hours in LORIS to be paid biweekly.

For instructions and to view the student pay schedule, see Student Employee Payroll. Any payroll questions can be directed to payroll@wlu.ca

Short-Term Floater Positions

Students in these roles will not have LORIS timesheets set-up given the short-term nature of these positions. You will instead track your own hours and report them directly to your supervisor for review and approval. Upon completion of the project, your supervisor will inform the LWSP coordinator of the total hours worked, and a one-time payment will be issued.

One-time payments are completed via direct deposit, so please ensure your direct deposit information is updated in LORIS (see Student Payroll Forms – Direct Deposit Form for instructions).

Training

All LWSP students must complete mandatory Laurier employee training.

  • Self-register on MyLearningSpace to complete: AODA: Integrated Accessibility Training and Young Worker Health and Safety Orientation (Part 1).
  • Register for Young Worker Health and Safety Orientation – Part 2. If you’ve completed this training for a previous on-campus position, you do not need to complete it again.
  • There may be additional safety training required for specific positions (e.g., Laboratory Safety). If this applies to your position, this will be communicated to you by your supervisor.

Your supervisor will coordinate any additional job-specific training.

Program Requirements

LWSP students will be enrolled in a course on Navigator where you can track your progress in the program and complete the following required program steps:

  • Watch an asynchronous orientation video (20 minutes) and set learning objectives (10 minutes) for your position tied to the competency framework.
  • Attend a synchronous Competency Reflection Workshop (30 minutes).
  • Complete a final reflection guided by the competency framework and a series of reflection questions (15 minutes).

Program steps should be completed during paid work hours. Once all steps are complete, the experience will appear on your Laurier Experience Record.

The program coordinator will email you once you’re enrolled in the course with more information on timelines and instructions for completing the steps. Make sure you monitor your Laurier email for program reminders and instructions throughout the term.
