Your student's first term at Laurier will no doubt be a journey of many new experiences, and we know that you are eager to support them through each milestone. Check out Laurier's Parents and Families page for additional information to help you support your student.
Great support starts with open and honest conversations.
Before your student begins at Laurier, asking thoughtful questions can help ease nerves, set expectations, and spark excitement for what’s ahead. Once classes begin, your role shifts from helping them prepare to cheering them on as they grow more independent. Checking in with curiosity helps you stay connected and reminds them you’re always in their corner.
Below are some great questions to help guide your chats before they start and during their first few weeks and months at Laurier.
Here are five key questions you can ask before your student begins their Laurier journey:
1. How involved would you like me to be in your university experience?
This question empowers your student to take ownership of their independence. It helps you both set boundaries and find a balance between offering support and giving them space to grow.
2. How often would you like me to check in, and what’s the best way to do that?
Establishing communication preferences early helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps your connection positive, whether it’s quick texts, weekly calls, or visits home.
3. What are you most excited (or nervous) about as you start university?
This question opens the door for honest reflection. It helps you celebrate their excitement and identify areas where they might want extra reassurance or preparation.
4. Have you explored any of the clubs, associations, or communities at Laurier that interest you?
Getting involved is one of the best ways to make friends and feel connected. This question encourages your student to think beyond academics and explore Laurier’s vibrant community.
5. How do you plan to take care of yourself once classes begin?
Encouraging students to prioritize well-being early reinforces healthy habits around sleep, nutrition, exercise, and downtime, all essential for success and balance.
Here are five great questions to ask during the first few weeks or months of the term:
1. How are you finding the transition to university life so far?
This open-ended question gives your student space to share both challenges and wins. It can lead to deeper discussions about time management, academics, and new experiences.
2. What’s been your favourite part of Laurier so far?
Focusing on positives helps your student recognize what’s going well and can remind them of the joy and community that come with new experiences.
3. How are you managing your workload and finding balance?
University academics can feel overwhelming at first. This question helps them reflect on study habits, routines, and the importance of rest and self-care.
4. Have you connected with any professors, classmates, or campus resources yet?
Encouraging connection helps students build their network of academic and social support which are both key to success and developing a sense of belonging.
5. What’s something new you’ve tried or learned about yourself since starting at Laurier?
Reflection helps students recognize their growth and resilience. It reinforces that university is not just about academics but about discovering who they are becoming.
