Top 10 Tasks for Incoming International Students

International Student Support offers immigration advising and organizes events for all international students. We know that preparing to study in Canada can feel overwhelming, so we created a handy checklist to help you start your Laurier journey confidently and smoothly.

Apply for a Study Permit

As an international student, you will need a valid study permit before travelling to Canada. International students must include a provincial attestation letter (PAL) with their study permit application now.

Need support? Join our study permit application workshops or connect with one of our International Student Advisors (ISAs) for personalized guidance with your application.

Find Your Home

Begin your housing search early whether you are planning to live on-campus or off-campus. Visit our Residence Page to understand how and when to apply for a residence. For off-campus housing options, follow these key steps to guide your search and learn about additional resources.

Set-Up Your Student Accounts

Activate your mylaurier email account to receive important communications from staff and instructors. Be sure to upload your OneCard photo online and pick it up once you are on campus. Your OneCard is a multipurpose student photo identification card that gives you access to campus services.

Register for Your Courses

Make sure you register for your courses before you arrive at Laurier. The longer you wait, the fewer course options you will have. Watch your mylaurier email address for course registration notifications. Check out the Registration Guide to learn how to choose and register for your courses.

Manage Your Finances

Explore payment methods in advance and pay your tuition on time to avoid late fees. Keep in mind that international payment can take longer to process. Plan your budget early to get a sense of living cost in Canada and check out scholarships and bursaries to support your studies.

Prepare for Your Travel

Review the list of important documents before your departure. When you travel from your home country to Canada, make electronic and paper copies of important documents (e.g., passport, port of entry letter, offer letter, etc.) and keep the originals with your carry-on baggage.

Getting to Laurier

You're almost here! Arriving in Fall 2025? If you have received your study permit and have begun making your travel arrangements to come to Canada, please complete the Fall 2025 Arrival Survey*.

*Please note that it is mandatory to complete the arrival survey 7 days before your arrival to Canada! This provides our team with crucial information to better prepare for your arrival at Laurier.

After you arrive at the airport, complete the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Declaration Card before you pass through customs. Expect immigration officers to ask you questions and have your documents ready to present.

You are responsible for arranging your own transportation from the airport to Laurier whether by public transit or taxi. Explore your travel options from the airport to campus:

Understand Your Health Insurance

International students will have two health insurance plans: University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) and Supplementary Plan. Each plan has different coverage and is managed by different units, so make sure you understand the differences.
