Cross-Registration with University of Waterloo

Laurier and University of Waterloo students can take courses at the respective institutions through cross-registration, providing you with the opportunity to broaden your academic experience.

Registration Process for Laurier Students

Laurier students are able to take courses at the UW through cross-registration.

Spring 2022 requests will begin to be processed at the end of March.

Note: BBA/BMath and BBA/BCS students do not use the cross-registration process. See course matching for more information.

How to Qualify

  • You are required to complete a minimum of 3.0 credits at Laurier (transfer credits excluded).
  • You must currently hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.00.
  • You may not be on Academic Probation in a General Program or in post-degree studies, including sequential degree.
  • You cannot exceed your program residence requirements.
  • You cannot exceed your maximum credit limit per term.
  • You must obtain written approval from your program's Department and Academic Advisor.

Note: The course equivalency must come from the department of the course you are requesting. For example, if you are requesting to take a Math course, your course equivalency must come from the Math department

Next Steps

If you receive approval and meet the above requirements, complete the Cross-Registration Form.

How to Apply

  1. Preview your requested course(s) on the UW Undergraduate Course Schedule.
  2. Obtain email approval from your Academic Advisor in a format that can be uploaded (e.g. "I approve John Smith to take BI101 at UW...").
  3. Obtain email Department approval from the Laurier department that matches the course you are requesting to take at UW.
    • For example, if you are a Science student requesting to take a UW Math course, you must obtain academic approval from Laurier's Science department and department approval from Laurier's Math department.
  4. Complete the Cross-Registration Form and upload your approvals. Submissions will be automatically sent to UWCrossReg@wlu.ca

Note: The Department of Languages and Literatures will approve the following courses: French, Spanish, German, Italian and Arabic. All other language courses do not require a Languages and Literatures advisor signature (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Chinese). Email UWCrossReg@wlu.ca with further questions.

Important Dates and Considerations

  • Adds for cross-registered courses must be submitted at Laurier according to UW add deadline dates
  • Drops for cross-registered courses must be submitted at Laurier according to Laurier drop deadline dates.
  • Your tuition fees will be due to Laurier with the rest of your tuition fees.
  • A separate form must be completed for each term you are registering.
  • It can take up to seven to 10 business days to process once the form is received. Once you are successfully cross registered at the University of Waterloo, you will receive a confirmation email.
  • If further information is required after your form is submitted, you will receive an email from UWCrossReg@wlu.ca.

Course Matching: Double Degree UW-Laurier Students (BBA/BMath and BBA/BCS)

The Laurier registration system is LORIS and the UW registration system is Quest. Students of the BBA/BMath and BBA/BCS programs have access to both registration systems. You must match your registrations on LORIS and Quest each academic term throughout the program.

For years 1 to 3, the BU courses are assigned as an integrated set on LORIS and cannot be changed. For years 4 and 5, registration in the applicable BU core courses is at your discretion using LORIS.

Laurier Course: Registration Changes (i.e., BU387 or EC260)

You are only officially registered in a Laurier course and section as it appears on LORIS. Changing your registration in a Laurier course on Quest does not hold true (not official).

Any change must occur first on LORIS within all posted Laurier academic dates for the term. Quest must then be used to match the registration change completed on LORIS.

UW Course: Registration Changes (i.e., STAT231 or CS330)

You are only officially registered in a UW course and section as it appears on Quest. Changing your registration in a Laurier course on LORIS does not hold true (not official).

Any change must occur first on Quest within all posted UW academic dates for the term. LORIS must then be used to match the registration change completed on Quest.

Using LORIS to Match UW Course Offerings

Open LORIS and select “Register for Classes”.

Select the appropriate “Term” and “Search” by subject.

Most UW subjects will have a UW prefix (i.e. UW-Computer Science). Some UW courses such as MATH237 will be found under the subject Mathematics and ENGL109 are found under the subject English.

  • All UW courses have a W listed at the end of the course code on LORIS (i.e. MA237W).
  • UW online courses are recognized by *T on LORIS.
  • UW in-person (on-campus) courses are recognized by *0 on LORIS.
  • LORIS does not record UW course sections (i.e. 001 or 002) or UW course times/rooms/professors.
  • Once the appropriate UW course is found on LORIS please ADD.
  • For any UW course that cannot be found on LORIS for a given term, please contact bbaadvising@wlu.ca for assistance.

Using Quest to Match Laurier Course Offerings

Sign in to Quest and select the Enroll tile.

Select the Add tab and if prompted select the term, then Continue.

Use the Search button to find classes.

  • All Laurier courses have a W attached to the course number on Quest. (e.g., BU352 at WLU versus BUS 352W at UW)
  • When adding Laurier courses on Quest, you must add your correct section. To determine the correct section number for Laurier courses on Quest, see the conversion table.
  • Use the Next button to add the class to your shopping cart and then select the Finish Enrolling button.
  • For any Laurier course that cannot be found on Quest for a given term, please contact mathbus@uwaterloo.ca for assistance.
