If you’re a transfer student, you’ll need academic advice before you begin planning your schedule and registering for courses. You should connect with an academic advisor as soon as you confirm your offer of admission. If you have not yet received a transfer credit assessment, please bring a recent transcript to your appointment.
A preliminary transfer credit assessment will be included in your Offer of Admission. Final transfer credit assessments are completed throughout the summer once we receive your final transcript directly from your previous institution. Have your official transcript sent to the Recruitment and Admissions office as soon as possible to ensure the best selection of courses.
Students interested in pursuing the co-op option should contact the Co-op Office directly regarding eligibility for co-op if receiving more than 2.5 transfer credits.
Your course registration date will be determined based on the number of transfer credits that were awarded to you. You can review your personal registration date and time by logging into LORIS, clicking on the Student Services Tab, and then navigate to Registration. Choose Prepare for Registration, and then select the Fall 2022 term. You should then be able to see your time ticket, which indicates when registration opens for you. On this day and time, you will be able to register for both your fall and winter term.
A transfer credit refers to a Laurier credit grated for postsecondary academic work that was completed at another institution. As often as possible, credit will be granted for a specific Laurier course (e.g. MA103). If a specific Laurier equivalent course is not available for work completed elsewhere, then an elective credit in the appropriate discipline will be granted (e.g. 0.5 junior unspecified Mathematics credit). If a specific equivalent course is not available, but there is significant overlap with the content of a Laurier course, then an exclusion may be applied (e.g. 0.5 100 level Mathematics credit void if MA103 is taken).
It's important to note that an exclusion is not a transfer credit and has no credit value. The combination of a miscellaneous transfer credit plus an exclusion is designed to alert transfer students to the overlap in content with a specific course, while recognizing the credit weight for the course previously taken. If you ultimately decide to take a course that has previously been listed as an exclusion, the original transfer credit will be removed from your record.
Students have one year from the start of their program, or from a change of program, to make a request for re-assessment. This request must be made in writing to the Recruitment and Admissions Office at transfercredit@wlu.ca.
